Small Meals

Intuitively I realized as we were waking, that Dan needs more meals throughout the day. To keep his strength and stamina up.
I awoke at 5, Dan at 7 when I gad brewed the Peets decaf and the dawn was streaming forth.

First we enjoyed granola banana and almond milk .

Then we returned to bed and slept until 11:00!

The next course was an egg in a hole, bacon and pass o guava juice.

We showered, dressed and went to Greet the whales and albatross. In the winter, whales andcalves play in these warm, languid waters. They were abundant today!
I called Dad.

February 1,2016

This poem captures the essence:

The breezes at dawn have secrets to tell you
Don't go back to sleep!
You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep!
People are going back and forth
across the doorsill where the two worlds touch,
The door is round and open
Don't go back to sleep!

I am always so eager for dawn on the island:
A soaking shower.
Distant cock-a-doodle.
Ocean's roar.
Golf cart hum.

I had a precious meditation.

Wrapped in
A nubby old vellux blanket it became my cocoon as i awaited the darkess becoming Light and being delivered to a New Day.

Gate C-8

I knew it would be a sweet day of travel when I reflected on this poem before boarding our flight to Kauai;)

Thank You Ellen Bass for a glimpse of 'heaven'.

Gate C22

At gate C22 in the Portland airport
a man in a broad-band leather hat kissed
a woman arriving from Orange County.
They kissed and kissed and kissed. Long after
the other passengers clicked the handles of their carry-ons
and wheeled briskly toward short-term parking,
the couple stood there, arms wrapped around each other
like he’d just staggered off the boat at Ellis Island,
like she’d been released at last from ICU, snapped
out of a coma, survived bone cancer, made it down
from Annapurna in only the clothes she was wearing.

Neither of them was young. His beard was gray.
She carried a few extra pounds you could imagine
her saying she had to lose. But they kissed lavish
kisses like the ocean in the early morning,
the way it gathers and swells, sucking
each rock under, swallowing it
again and again. We were all watching–
passengers waiting for the delayed flight
to San Jose, the stewardesses, the pilots,
the aproned woman icing Cinnabons, the man selling
sunglasses. We couldn’t look away. We could
taste the kisses crushed in our mouths.

But the best part was his face. When he drew back
and looked at her, his smile soft with wonder, almost
as though he were a mother still open from giving birth,
as your mother must have looked at you, no matter
what happened after–if she beat you or left you or
you’re lonely now–you once lay there, the vernix
not yet wiped off, and someone gazed at you
as if you were the first sunrise seen from the Earth.
The whole wing of the airport hushed,
all of us trying to slip into that woman’s middle-aged body,
her plaid Bermuda shorts, sleeveless blouse, glasses,
little gold hoop earrings, tilting our heads up.

Groceries!

Fun for the girls.

I described my vision loss to Marilyn  and away we went in the red jeep.

We used two carts at Foodland and mostly bought everything on the prior list, adding Anahola granola, yogurt, bacon, corn on the cob, beer and green tea. I could not find the decaf!

It was 7:00 when we left the grocery. Time for night blindness. I could have brought a white cane but I had a powerful shopping cart.
That was fun;)

Marilyn led me through the dark parking lot to the jeep. She loaded all the bags, 4 each, into the Jeep and drove us home.

Ed greeted us in the dark with a hobble. They led me and all the groceries to our condo where Dan and Pilgrim greeted us.

I was proud of how well I shopped I ued my eyeglasses!

I unloaded food and made a simple dinner of Kiluea greens with cucumber and avocado,  roasted chicken and a Wente chardonnay.
We ate outdoors as Pilgrim finished his second one scoop bowl of kibble. All was quiet and peaceful in Paradise.

I needed a shower to wash away the agitation of travel. Then it was bedtime.

Part Two Sunday Travel 1/31

Pilgrim was inspected for tics. And passed the physical examination at the gate.

Dan was weak and had no stamina.

Traveling is not like staying home, where everything is at your fingertips. In first class the male attendent Jeremy was Amazing; respectful, eager, courteous, and empathetic somehow.

He served breakfast to us
A POG Mimosa
Fruit Plate of strawberries and sliced grapefruit
Danish
A choice of the scrambled eggs with a cheese blintz,  pineapple compote and smoked sausage or the scrambled with shrimp and chives and roast potatoes.

Then Dan slept three hours while I read.

We were awakened by the offer of snacks: we chose the banana and smoked almonds then recieved a warm cup of mixed nuts. Dan stayed hydrated as well.

Lunch in Honolulu went well at Stinger Rays. A BLT for Dan and the quinoa salad for me. We shared.

The rolling suitcase Dan bought this week was a huge improvement from the duffle bag he usually slogs.

We started slowing fatigue after landing in Lihue. We were up at 4:00 and landed about 2:00 PST. 12 here.

We rode to the wrong rental car agency.

Arriving at The Cliffs,  our room wasn't ready.

(Pilgrim though prfect was hungry and patient just the same.)

We needed to unpack but Dan urgently needed to sleep.

There was a craft fairin the pavilion so only one chair was available. Dan rested there.

I fed Pilgrim who was pulling me gently towards room 4105 which we stayed in last year!

We finally were able to get the key cards.
Dan went to bed just as a good rain shower came in and I unpacked. Urgently I texted Ed and Marilyn our grocery list. We needed to eat but the cupboard was bare! They
were just arriving.

When Dan awoke we went to greet them in 4210. Marilyn and I decided to go for groceries. Ed has sciatica and the three men stayed behind.

Traveling to Kauai Sunday 1/31

Honestly, the travel from Portland to Honolulu went seamlessly! Ease with first class, Mercy of the  Americans with Disabilities Act snd Pilgrim's maturity and basic intelligence! He's done this before;)
